Independent sales representative
Independent Sales Representatives (reps) are 100% commission-only reps that represent more than one manufacturer or principal in nearly every field imaginable. Manufacturers/Principals sign contracts with independent sales reps as an alternative to hiring a direct sales force. Since these independent reps work strictly off commission, they do not receive salary or benefits. Sales reps make their money by adding multiple, complementary lines that they can present to their buyers.
After the initial sale, products or services are usually ordered directly from the manufacturer, who then pays a sales commission to the independent rep or independent rep agency firm. This limits the expense incurred by the manufacturer. Using an independent rep is a good way to expand sales because there are no up-front costs or risks associated with hiring sales employees. Independent sales reps can help not only well-established companies but start-ups as well. In essence, any company desiring to get their product or service into different markets can increase sales using independent reps.
