Controversy and Later Lawsuit
Christopher Mathisen was a member of the local basketball team. He was making dunks pre-game when the backboard suddenly broke and the glass, fractured, lay on the floor below. According to a rule written 10 years ago, pre-game dunks are banned and if there are any damages, the offending player and his team are disqualified. The civic center later sued for compensation on damages, but the case was dismissed in the teams favor, the judge remarked, "Stuff happens, an arbitrary rule written 10 years ago is not grounds for a lawsuit." During the case the Civic center was told they alone would have to repair damages.
