GRIN Technology

GRIN technology is the Genetics, Robotics, Information, and Nano technologies which are thought to have tremendous potential in the future. Together they have been speculated to generate very futuristic devices that can solve many major problems. Research into these fields is a growing area with promise of great things to come.

Genetics

Future technology is predicted to allow doctors to alter the genes of human embryos. These changes can theoretically PReVENT diseases, maximize the functioning of organs and muscles, and perhaps even increase intelligence. There will likely be substantial moral opposition to those methods, as evidenced by the debate over stem cell research. The movie Gattaca provides an in depth look at what could happen in the future if only some people are genetically superior, and the rest are discriminated against.

Robotics

Robots are in heavy use already, but are predicted to become cheap and advanced enough in the future to be practical and widely used in many applications. Robots may attain humanoid intelligence and become companions, as depicted in many science fiction movies and books. Fear that the robots may take over are explored in movies like The Matrix and I, Robot.

Intricate and precise robots are already used to some extent in modern surgery, but they could likely replace all surgeons eventually. As Information and Nano technology improves, robots may replace virtually all labor and other kinds of human jobs. The advanced computing power and programming is hoped to boost the skill level and accuracy of robots to actually be better than humans because of their consistency.

Information Technology

Information is a vast category ranging from spoken word to writing to the internet. The smaller size, increased efficiency, and exponentially advancing computing power paints a very fantasy like world. Moore's Law states that computing power technology doubles every eighteen months, and this law has proven relatively accurate. The exponential increase means that the future will see massively powerful computers.

Computers could surpass the human mind in computing power, and someday, perhaps even become conscious. Either way, we could still theoretically use these technologies to improve the circuitry of our own brains, manually increasing our own intelligence. Then, if we can do that from our current state, the more intelligent versions of ourselves will also be smart enough to improve themselves again. Ultimately, humans may reach a transcendental state of virtual perfection, living in a complete euphoric paradise, constructed by our magestic technologies maximizing our brains ability to experience absolute bliss forever. Immortality with back up copies, courtesy of the interconnectedness of all our minds to each other and perfect environments with eternal nirvana.

Nano Technology

Nano technology involves atomic and sub-atomic particles being manipulated towards some purpose. It is currently very speculative and there are no existing means of assembling individual atoms manually. However, if utilized, nano technology has several potential applications with lots of benefits.

Nanotech assemblers could be used to build literally anything using basic elements to construct an object molecularly. This would allow anything and everything to be spontaneously created anywhere with no man labor at all, requiring only the instructions and information to build the object, and the Raw Elements. Nano technology could also aid the medical industry, possibly with the help of robotics, to maintain the human body at the microscopic or even molecular level.
