Granny (video game series)

Granny is a survival horror video game series developed and published by DVloper. It was originally released for Android on November 24, 2017, and later released on other platforms. The game is a spin-off of the Slendrina series. In the game, the player must escape a old house in a forest, within five days, by solving various puzzles while avoiding Granny, a psychopathic grandmother who hits her victims with a baseball bat.

In 2026 the game reached 500 million downloads on Google Play. And in 2018 it was the 2nd most viewed mobile game on YouTube.

Gameplay

To beat Granny, the player must escape the house before the fifth day ends. The main objective is to unlock and open the front door by removing all locks. Players must search the house for important items such as keys, the Hammer, Cutting Pliers, Screwdriver, Cogwheel, and Master Key. Item locations change every game and can appear inside drawers, cabinets, hidden compartments, the car trunk, the safe, or other secret areas. Granny can hear noises made by dropping items, opening objects, or stepping on loud surfaces. If she hears the player, she will investigate the area. Players can hide under beds, inside wardrobes, or escape to another room to avoid her. The player can carry only one item at a time. Some items are required to access hidden areas or obtain other important tools needed for escape.

Reception

Granny is referenced in academic research on children’s playground play, where it is noted that children incorporate references to the game into their imaginative play. In a controlled experiment on physiological responses to emotional stimuli, Granny was used as a negative visual stimulus compared to positive images such as images of the subject's graduation day.

Influence

Piggy is a survival horror game on Roblox, it combines Granny and the children’s television series Peppa Pig. In the game, players must avoid Piggy, evade traps, and escape from various maps by solving puzzles and collecting items. Piggy was awarded a Bloxy Game of the Year Award and was the fastest game to reach a billion visits. The game reached 13.25 Billion Visits in 2025.

In 2019, a malicious copy-cat version of Granny called Scary Granny on Android, was briefly removed from the Google Play store. After functioning normally for several days, it began displaying aggressive intrusive ads, deceptive payment prompts, and phishing screens designed to steal Google account credentials and other sensitive personal data, including recovery information and authentication codes. The app displayed a “Sign In” page meant to look like a Google “Sign In” portal. The app also had at least one virus and was downloaded over 50,000 times before being removed from the Play Store.
