Critter Café

Critter Café is a simulation and management video game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Secret Mode.

It was released on 26 November 2024 for Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows.

Gameplay

Critter Café is a management simulation game in which players operate a café while rescuing and caring for magical creatures known as "Critters", all set on the fictional island of Gold Leaf Isle.

The game combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and café management. Exploration of the island allows players to discover blueprints used to unlock new furniture and decorative items for the café.

Sokoban-style puzzle-solving features prominently in "The Otherlands", accessed via portals, where players rescue Critters. Each rescued Critter is recorded in a journal referred to as the "Critterpedia".

The game includes café customisation, resource management, and food and drink preparation through time- and reaction-based mini-games, alongside customer satisfaction mechanics.

Development

Critter Café was developed by Sumo Digital and published by Secret Mode using Unreal Engine 5.

The game originated as an internal game jam project created by Eleanor Gregory, who described it as a "cozy" experience focused on creature care and accessible gameplay.

In interviews, Gregory stated that the game focuses on rescuing magical creatures through environmental puzzles and integrating them into café management, with an emphasis on player expression and customisation.

Additional commentary highlighted its focus on escapism and a relaxed gameplay loop.

The game received pre-release coverage from several gaming publications, including IGN, which noted its emphasis on cute creature design and café management mechanics.
