Developed in response to the need to promote equal opportunities in the Global Job Market through quality education, the Global Language Center is a non profit social project that aims to encourage the participation of Brazilian civil society at the global level, and seeks to promote social transformation and integration among people through cultural exchange, language training and sustainable development.

The Global Language Center is supported by the PALMARES INSTITUTE OF HUMAN RIGHTS (IPDH) 1– a non profit organization that includes amongst its many initiatives the AFRICAN BRAZILIAN BUSINESS INCUBATOR 2, an innovative project that promotes sustainable economic development.

The Incubator and IPDH were the recipients of the Marketing Best of Social Responsibility Award in 2006 as well as the 2004 Prêmio Orilaxé, awarded by Afro Reggae, which is Brazil’s most prestigious award for social development projects.

Over the last 17 years, IPDH has been spearheading the promotion of equal opportunity and affirmative action, supported by, and in partnership with, major institutions of economic and social development in the world,- both in the public and private sector alongside civil society organizations.

One of our main goals is to promote an innovative approach to language training that simultaneously teaches social inclusion and sustainable development While enabling students to acquire foreign language skills. Through a Multidisciplinary Team we try to understand each student’s specific needs, especially those related to self-esteem and their educational background.

OUR METHODOLOGY

Our training is tailored to address a specific purpose, while also building solid learning and communication capacities amongst students. Our methodology is based on the principles of ESL (English as a Second Language) from Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press – institutional partners of the Global Language Center.

From basic to advanced training to special planning, the main goal of our methodology is to combine respect for to the group’s diversity while also being attentive to each student's unique characteristics – formulating the ideal course for each professional profile, company or institution.

Our methodology places emphasis on improving communication capacity in a general manner, in other words, enabling the student to understand and to be understood with clarity, efficiency and confidence. To this end, we use of a great variety of pedagogical instruments of proven efficacy – from the most traditional to the most modern and innovative, formulated by the two main publishers in the language training business.

We have as a goal to combine the renowned proposal of English for Special Purposes (ESP) to the ICT and multimedia tools, offering the adequate balance between a solid learning background and a dynamic instrumentation – necessary for basic communication in specific situations.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM

At the Global Language Center the formulation and application of the content of the Educational Program are provided through a Multidisciplinary Team. Emphasis is on developing the appropriate planning, adapting to circumstances inherent to the process of social inclusion through quality education. The Multidisciplinary Team’s work is divided into three areas of performance:

TEACHING COORDINATION – team formed by Language, Education, Pedagogy, Arts and Fonoaudiology professionals and students.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL COORDINATION – team formed by Psychology, Social Service, Communication and Social Sciences professionals and students.

EXCHANGE COORDINATION – team formed by Communication, International Relations and Arts professionals and students.

Along with the didactic material and the methodology, the Multidisciplinary Team is one of the pillars of our educational proposal, operating in an interdisciplinary way, seeking to:

PALMARES INSTITUTE OF HUMAN RIGHTS - IPDH

3 In a partnership with the IPDH’s Educational Program, the first Pilot Classes of Global Language Center had a total of 155 applications. The English Pilot Classes began in the first week of September. The students are placed in classes according to criteria of learning level and area of interest.

The selection – led by a team of social workers and educators from the Educational Program – is oriented by Affirmative Action philosophy, considering income, geographical origin, ethnic-racial origin and gender, and also considering the student's dedication.

Located at Lapa, the most important Cultural District in Rio de Janeiro, IPDH is a non profit institution, founded in 1989. Responsible for innovative social transformation initiatives, IPDH’s projects are supported by institutions such as Petrobras, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Inter-American Foundation (IAF), Eletrobras, Ministry of Promotion of Racial Equality, Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Sebrae, SENAC and Metro Rio.

AMPLIFYING YOUTH VOICES ON POVERTY RIGHTS AND DISCRIMINATION (AYV)

- Global Rights Developed by Global Rights, Amplifying Youth Voices on Rights, Poverty and Discrimination is a new program that aims to build a global movement of youth from marginalized communities who are able to grapple with issues of poverty and discrimination from a human rights perspective; to facilitate dialogue between young leaderships and national and international policy makers; and to promote greater equity in society by ensuring that the needs of marginalized ethnic and racial communities are included in the achievement of poverty reduction plans, such as the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals.

The regional young leaders and their teams of researchers are responsible for collecting quantitative and qualitative data to show that the educational opportunities available in their community are of a poorer quality than those available to the rest of the population.

The information collected will be used to create an advocacy tool that will be used to lobby for reform at both the international and domestic level. The participants of AYV will engage in a Global Dialogue with human rights experts and international policy makers.

The aim is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between experts working at the international level, and young activists working at the grassroots level. The young activists will present the results of the research they have collected on educational disparities between their own communities and the rest of the population.

Global Rights is a human rights advocacy group that partners with local activists to challenge injustice and amplify new voices within the global discourse. With offices in countries around the world, Global Rights help local activists create just societies through proven strategies for effecting change. In all its programs, Global Rights emphasizes promoting women's human rights and combating discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity or [...] orientation.

OTHER WAYS FOR BEING OUR PARTNER

The profile of the Global Language Center partners includes social projects, NGOs, non profit institutions, cooperatives, associations, unions, public institutions and companies linked to the Tourism and Services sectors – related to the promotion of social inclusion through education, along with other institutions and organizations of the civil society.

In the restaurant Barra Brasa – one of Rio de Janeiro’s main gastronomic centers – we teach Instrumental English for a group of low income employees (waiters, hostesses and kitchen staff) which serves as model for the kind of partnership we propose to for profit institutions. Barra Brasa assumed responsibility r to pay for their staff’s education.

Another partnership model is the consolidation of groups of 20 students and the cession of space and infrastructure for the classes, along other ideas to be discussed.
