Giuseppe Macario
Giuseppe Macario (; born 1981) is an Italian social entrepreneur, computer programmer and researcher.
Early career
Macario remains the first and only Italian computer programmer to set two world records by solving problems of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ANSI C and Java). One of the records (MIDI preprocessing) has later been equaled, but not beaten, by the American software architect Robert Lyon.
Virtual world entrepreneurship
Under the mandate of the President of the Italian Republic and supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Giuseppe Macario made use of a number of techniques to exploit Oracle technologies in agriculture by means of simulations carried out in virtual worlds.
When the Second Life virtual world became a vast seeding ground of entrepreneurship, Macario conducted the first Italian experiment of social entrepreneurship in Second Life under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, focusing on the fields of virtual worlds and virtual economies. The experiment also examined important aspects of computational advertising in Italy and algorithmic techniques related to machine-learned ranking systems for Italy-based search engines.
He is a member of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, in charge of virtual reality technologies.
Cultural activities in Second Life
In Second Life Giuseppe Macario ran a bilingual Italian/English independent news agency, whose areas of interest include freedom of speech in Italy and the preservation of Italy's artistic and natural heritage. The agency also used to translate Reuters Second Life bureau's news into Italian, until the bureau shut down in March 2009. The LSL news feed has been used by people from all over the world with the goal of better understanding the Italian culture and language, as well as by the Q&A site WikiAnswers.
He created an independent region for Mensa International, of which he is a member. The purposes of the region were:
- to encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence,
- to promote stimulating intellectual and social opportunities for its residents.
Another project, in the educational field, is the International telematic university. This virtual campus, located in a dedicated Second Life region, hosted a variety of lectures, workshops, slide shows, discussions, field trips, and hands-on building activities.
