Gilgamesh-class Destroyer
The fictional Gilgamesh-class Destroyer was a Terran Confederation capital starship in the Wing Commander universe. The first appearance of these destroyers was in the computer game Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi.
AbOUT
As with most destroyers, The Primary role is escort but the firepower of the Gilgamesh is far greater than the vessel it replaced. A Gilgamesh destroyer can go against any Kilrathi capital ship on its own. Gilgamesh-class destroyers have earned a reputation as a dangerous ship killers, credited with the destruction of a large number of Kilrathi frigates, destroyers, and light cruisers during their years in service.
These destroyers are extremely fast and can out-accelerate virtually any other capital ship. Due to this, the destroyers have the ability to escape if they are Overwhelmed by enemy forces. Their high acceleration also allows them to catch other ships trying to escape. The same engine is also carried on the first escort carriers. The destroyers are armed with a pair of anti-matter cannons and another pair of flak cannons.
Namesakes
- Ships of Gilgamesh-class destroyers were named after mythic heroes, notable ships were the TCS William Tell, Hector, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh.
