Fuyucon

Fuyucon ('fuyu' being Japanese for winter) is an anime convention based in the Midlands area of the United Kingdom. The first Fuyucon took place in Nottingham in October 2007 and although relatively new attracted a modest amount of interest from anime fans across the UK. The convention was formed after many committee members of the East Midlands Anime Group (EMAG) took it upon themselves to offer another anime convention based within the united Kingdom.

Venue

Fuyucon was run in the Britannia Hotel, Nottingham. The hotel acted as both the venue where events took place and as accommodation for people attending the convention.

Fuyucon 2007

Fuyucon ran from the 19th-21st October 2007, Fuyucon was run around this time of year to not clash with other main anime conventions, most notably AmeCon, and to establish a UK convention in the winter.

Helen McCarthy attended as a guest for the event and took part in some of the various panels that Fuyucon had arranged. Japanese cultural expoert Akemi Solloway also attended and gave presentations and demonstrations on how to wear a kimono and the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Cosplay

Cosplay was permitted allowing attendees at Fuyucon dressed up as various manga/anime characters and also characters from games with Japanese design.

Some events used cosplay as the main theme such as the ones below:

  • Masquerade - The masquerade allowed people to show off their cosplays to other people who attended the convention.
  • Cosplay Ball - The cosplay ball occurred on the last night of Fuyucon. The cosplay ball was a formal dress occasion (formal cosplay was permitted), guests danced to music and this event acted as a farewell to everyone before fuyucon finished after this event.

Fuyucon 2009

Fuyucon have announced that they plan to a run second event in 2009 at a different venue. Tentative dates for FuyuCon 2009 are Friday 16th October 2009 to Sunday 18th October 2009, but are yet to be finalized.
