"Freshen Up" toilet attendants

"Freshen Up" toilet attendants are toilet attendants, both male and female, which have suddenly become common in recent years in popular chain pubs and clubs across the South East of England and elsewhere.

The most common slogans employed by these attendants, for the purpose of selling perfumes and other goods to customers, incorporate the words "Freshen up", for example:

  • "Don't you know freshen up, you got to freshen up!" (Sung to the tune of "Pump It Up" by the Belgian musician Danzel.)
  • "Freshen up for the punani!" (Punani being a popular slang term for the vagina.)
  • "Freshen up, lollipop!" (A common slogan in female toilets, where Lollipops are more often found for sale.)

As time progresses, slogans employed by these "Freshen up guys" become more numerous. The most common being in the form of rhyming couplets of the type in the third example above, such as: "No spray, no lay." ("Spray" referring to perfumes and aftershaves on offer, and "lay" being a colloquial term for [...]), "No splash, no gash" (Gash being a popular slang term for the vagina) and "No Armani, no punani" ('Armani' being a popular make of aftershave) etc.

The Release of the U.K. Top 10 single "Pump It Up" by Danzel in late 1994 dates the emergence of the "Freshen up guy" phenomenon to some time after this point. However, it is unknown why this particular slogan, to this particular tune, was so widespreadly employed by these toilet attendants that the term "Freshen up guy" should have been coined at all, except that such toilet attendants in pubs and clubs were practically unheard of before the emergence of many "Freshen up guys" over a relatively short period of time.
