FIN (sports drink)

FIN() is a Taiwanese sports drink introduced in 2002 by the Heysong Corporation. The drink is marketed as an isotonic "replenishment beverage" and is claimed to be formulated in order to quickly restore water and electrolytes lost during sweating.

FIN was Taiwan's first locally developed isotonic sports drink and featured a low-calorie formula, as well as the slogan "If water isn't enough, just drink FIN!". Manufactured in Taiwan, the drink has become a leading sports drink in the domestic market and competes with products such as Super Supau and Pocari Sweat.

History

FIN was introduced by the HeySong Corporation on May 28, 2002, at a time when Taiwanese consumer preferences were being shaped by rising health consciousness and higher demands for functional beverages. The drink was unveiled during a press conference on that day, where it was claimed that the drink was formulated with deep ocean mineral water obtained from off the coast of Japan. The use of deep-sea water was allegedly intended to enhance electrolyte content and hydration efficiency.

HeySong reportedly invested approximately NT$50 million in marketing the new product and hired Taiwanese baseball player Cheng Chang-ming as the product's first endorser. That same year, the company set an initial sales goal of NT$100 million for 2002 and heavily began promoting the drink's slogan "喝水不夠,喝FIN就好!" ("If drinking water isn’t enough, just drink FIN!"), aiming to position FIN as a "superior thirst quencher".

In the years after its release, FIN began rapidly gaining market share where Super Supau, Pocari Sweat and Aquarius (known in Taiwan as "Baojian") had previously dominated. After Baojian was pulled from markets in the early-2000s, FIN quickly "filled the gap" in the top three. Within approximately three years, FIN had reportedly overtaken Pocari Sweat in sales, becoming the second-best selling sports drink in some retail channels (behind Supau).

Over time, HeySong consistently introduced updates and line extensions for FIN. In 2008, FIN underwent a "visual refresh", where the company opted for a "sleeker" logo and translucent bottle in order to modernize the drink's image. In subsequent years, FIN's product line began expanding to include drinks from beyond the original formula, including "FIN Sparkling Water with Fiber" in 2019 and "FIN Probiotic Replenishment Drink (FIN 好菌補給飲)" in 2023 which included a patented Lactobacillus strain. That same year (2023), the new probiotic drink was honored as one of the “Top Ten Tastiest New Products of the Year” in the annual Food Innovation Awards in Taiwan.

Product Description

FIN is formulated as an isotonic sports drink, meaning that its osmotic pressure, or tonicity is similar to human body fluids, thus allowing for more efficient absorption. The original FIN drink formula is a clear, lightly flavored beverage noted by consumers to have a refreshing taste that is not overly sweet.

The drink itself contains water, high-fructose corn syrup to serve as a carbohydrate, inulin, natural grapefruit-like agents, added electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium salts, as well as a small amount of vitamin C to serve as an antioxidant stabilizer. The product's formula is considered low-calorie compared to typical drinks of its kind. A 580 mL bottle contains roughly 100 calories and 24 grams of sugar (approximately 4-5% sugar concentration). This lower sugar content gives FIN a mild sweetness, which is described by consumers as a light, clean citrus flavor without the cloying sweetness of some competitors. The drink appears transparent and colorless, aligning with consumer preferences after past controversies over clouding agents in sports drinks.
