Ernesto Hübner

Ernesto Alberto Hübner Bermúdez (7 August 1859 – 20 April 1916) was a Chilean lawyer, judge, academic and politician who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, as a senator and as Minister of Finance under President Germán Riesco.

A member of the Radical Party, he represented Angol, Traiguén and Collipulli in the Chamber of Deputies from 1903 to 1906 and was elected senator for Maule for the 1906–1912 legislative term.

Early life

Hübner was born in Los Andes on 7 August 1859 to Carlos Adolfo Hübner Bode and Petronila Bermúdez Sanhueza. He studied law at the University of Chile and qualified as a lawyer on 3 January 1880. He subsequently practiced law in Valparaíso.

He married Olivia Richardson de la Barra, with whom he had three children.

In 1878, Hübner served as assistant secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Free Night School for Adults. He was appointed commercial judge in Valparaíso on 27 April 1892 and continued his judicial career after the commercial courts were abolished in 1897.

Hübner also pursued an academic career, serving as substitute professor of political economy at the University of Chile.

Political career

Hübner was a member of the Radical Party, in which he served as a director and as president of both the party assembly and its provincial board.

He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Angol, Traiguén and Collipulli for the 1903–1906 legislative term, although he did not take his seat until 11 September 1903.

During the presidency of Germán Riesco, Hübner was appointed Minister of Finance on 30 October 1904. He remained in office until 18 March 1905.

Hübner was subsequently elected senator for Maule for the 1906–1912 legislative term, replacing Domingo Fernández Concha, who died in November 1910. According to the Library of the National Congress, Hübner apparently took his seat in November 1911. His election was subject to a lengthy dispute, and the relevant records and challenges were referred to the ordinary courts without a final ruling being issued.

Hübner died in Valparaíso on 20 April 1916.
