Engineering college rankings in India

The engineering colleges rankings in India have been published multiple times, by a few different magazines. Similar to the rankings provided by US News and World Report, Indian engineering schools are annually ranked by Mint, Outlook, India Today, and DataQuest. While the first two consider public and private schools separately for greater clarity, the latter ones try to rank them all together.

There are significant differences between publicly funded institutions and privately funded ones, the major one being that the selections both for admissions and the choice of department in publicly funded institutes are solely based on national or regional competitive exam rankings, but privately funded institutions are free to use alternative measures to select their students. This does not mean that private institutions are not competitive. For instance, the admissions in Birla Institute of Technology are based on highly competitive national entrance exam, but then the choice of department for the student is established after a candidate interview where the board reviews other credentials, extra-curricular activities, and interests of a student.

2007

In 2007, rankings were done by both Outlook and India Today. Outlook ranked India's top fifty engineering colleges. The top schools were Birla Institute of Technology and Science, PSG College of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology.

India Today published the rankings of the best engineering schools, as well. IIT Chennai, IIT Mumbai, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee were the Top Five picks.

2008

In 2008, Mint ranked just the best fifty private engineering colleges in India. SASTRA University, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, People's Education Society Institute of Technology, and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering made the top five.
