Richard Charles Neitzel Holzapfel was born in Black Foot Idaho on September 17, 1955. As a child he moved regularly due to his father's naval career. They moved to and from Southern California, Maine, and Hawaii. He graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1973. He later went on to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for two years in Italy and Switzerland.
He then studied at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he met his wife Jeni Broberg, daughter of John Mclaine "JB" Broberg. A year later their first child was born. He moved his young family to Irvine, California to pursue his doctorate at the University of California Irvine, UCI where he simultaneously worked for the Church Educational System, CES. His first book, Old Mormon Nauvoo 1839-1846, was released in 1990. He received his doctorate in first Century Roman History. After completing his schooling in 1993 he was hired at BYU as a Professor in the religion department.
He has since written over 32 books and countless articles. He is a world traveller. He often lectures around the US and other countries.
One of his latest books What Davinci Didn't Know was directed at the Dan Brown novel The Davinci Code. While Holzapfel does not condemn the book or the Hollywood movie, he encourages people to remember that it is only a novel and that it was not written by an historian.
Dr Holzapfel is a Full Professor at Brigham Young University and currently runs the "Religious Educator", a quarterly journal published by the university. He lives in Provo, Utah, with his wife. They have five adult children, Nathanael, Zachary, Zanna, Marin, and Bailey.
