Dead Boys (play)
Dead Boys (Play) is a collaborative performance between choreographer Joe Goode and singer-songwriter Holcombe Waller.
Premiere
Dead Boys had its worldwide premiere at UC Berkeley, October 9 – 18, 2009. The play was developed through a six-week intensive workshop with the cast (all UC Berkeley Students and Faculty).
The Skinny
Dead Boys is “a multi-disciplinary mash-up of dance, music, and theater inspired by this new era of hope and apathy. Dead Boys is a "freak folk musical about trust, gay activism, gender identity, talking to the dead, and the privileged culture's pursuit of happiness."
Plot
Dead Boys centers on a group of aimless 20-something San Francisco roommates, and their search for meaning and intimacy. Monroe (Daniel Duque-Estrada) is a gay filmmaker/performance artist plagued by nightmares of disembodied Others—those struggling to survive—invading his sheltered life of a disenchanted hipster. His roommates Brandon (Nicholas Trengove) and Carly (Rachel Ferensowicz) dance around their mutual attraction, and yet seem unable to connect. Add several S/M-loving neighbors, a wise-Anna-Madrigal-like landlady (Lura Dolas), and a scene of body-possession (all sung and often danced) to the mix, and Monroe ends up forced to face his own demons and realize that the world is much smaller than he thought it was.
