Dead as Disco
Dead as Disco is a rhythm-action beat 'em up video game developed and published by Brain Jar Games. It launched into early access for Windows on 5 May 2026, following a demo that attracted over a million players. Critics have described the title as a "vivid, unrestrained romp" that merges music-video aesthetics with rhythmic brawling.
Gameplay
Dead as Disco is a "martial arts meets music video" game where combat mechanics are synchronised to the tempo of the background music. Players control Charlie Disco from a third-person perspective, utilising a "free-flow" combat system similar to the Batman: Arkham series.
In contrast to typical rhythm games (where strict timing is required), the game's engine procedurally scales animations so that attacks land "on the beat" regardless of when the player inputs a command. This allows for an accessible experience while still rewarding players who maintain precise composure with higher scores, cinematic finishers and "takedown tokens."
Key gameplay features include:
- Fever Meter: Landing successful rhythmic attacks fills a meter to trigger a Fever Rush where Charlie uses drumsticks as high-speed weapons.
- Style-Based Scoring: Players are encouraged to perform non-damaging dance moves to sustain combos and increase their standing on global leaderboards.
- Customisation: The game features an editor that allows players to import personal music files, for which the engine detects the beats per minute and adjusts the combat flow to match.
Synopsis
The narrative centres on Charlie Disco, a former drummer who returns from the dead to crash the concerts of his seven former bandmates. These antagonists, known as Idols, have become solo stars representing different musical subcultures.
Idols
Some of the Idols include:
- Hemlock: A punk rock boss fought in a neon-saturated subway system.
- Aurora: A K-pop inspired idol whose stage is a "galactic fever dream" set on the rings of Jupiter.
- Dex: A metal-focused musician whose world is rendered entirely in black and white.
- Prophet: A wealthy rapper and producer who is confronted in his glamorous compound.
Development
Dead as Disco is the debut project from London-based Brain Jar Games, an independent studio founded in 2021 by veterans of companies such as Electronic Arts and Telltale Games. The studio secured $6.7 million in seed funding to develop the title.
The developers cited classic titles like Streets of Rage 2 and Devil May Cry as primary influences for the stylish combat and scoring systems. The game was showcased as part of the Triple-i Initiative in 2026 alongside other major independent titles.
Release
The game released on Steam and the Epic Games Store on 5 May 2026.
Although initially launched for PC, the developers have confirmed plans for a future release on PlayStation 5.
Reception
During its Early Access launch, Dead as Disco received critical acclaim from several major gaming outlets.
TechRadar praised it as "one of the best indie games" ever played, noting that its rhythmic mechanics surpassed those of Hi-Fi Rush in terms of depth.
Rock Paper Shotgun highlighted how the game successfully filled a niche for fans of both rhythm games and the Arkham series.
PC Gamer lauded its energy, comparing the experience to playing through a choreographed fight scene from the film Baby Driver.
