DDR Freak
DDR Freak is one of the largest Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and music gaming communities on the Internet, with over 65,000 members. It is primarily an American community, though it also has members from other countries such as The United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico. Its primary focus is on the game, Dance Dance Revolution, but it also provides resources on other games in Konami's Bemani series, as well as other non-Konami music and rhythm games such as Pump It Up and In The Groove. One frequently-used feature on the site is a "Machine Locations" database which allows visitors to track down the location of the nearest DDR game machine in their area.
History
DDR Freak was the brainchild of Jason Ko (aka JDogg) while at the University of California, Berkeley. Originally just a gathering for DDR players in the local area, it gained prominence as an international focus for discussion AbOUT the DDR and Konami dancing community. The site was originally created on March 12, 2000, with a different domain of ddrfreak.n3.net, and was then redesigned a year later.
Machine locations
One of DDR Freak's special features is its machine locations list, which is editable by members. It is searchable by the public, which can use to find DDR machines near them, in addition to any other music, rhythm, or Bemani game that May Be at an arcade. The database includes directions, the operating hours, and addresses for the arcades; users can also specify search options including mile radius, game mix or version, city, state, zip code, and country. In addition, the list allows members to rate each arcade. Certain arcades are also given their own official topic on the message forums.
Step charts
Another of DDR Freak's unique features is its step chart database, which contains step charts for nearly every DDR song (and even some from In The Groove) for all difficulties. These step charts also include specific data about the song including BPM, difficulty rating, and max combo achievable.
DDR Freak Radio
DDR Freak also maintains its own online radio station, which offers two different streams, for both high-speed and dial-up users. DDR Freak Radio is hosted on the Live365 Internet radio service, and streams 24-hour MP3 music from various Bemani games, including DDR.
