Dave was born in Gwersyllt, Wrexham.
Dave started his footballing career playing for local junior teams, before spending a brief spell at the Crewe Alexandra F.C. Centre of Excellence at age 13, along with fellow Ysgol Bryn Alyn pupil and future Welsh International Robbie Savage.
In July 2001, after a few years at Cymru Alliance team Lex XI F.C., Dave joined the club now named NEWI Cefn Druids F.C. in the League of Wales.
Although Cunnah played a big role in getting the Ancients to the semi-final of the Welsh Cup for the first time in 98 years with the winner against Halkyn United in the last 16, he was actually suspended for the Bangor game.
After three seasons and 71 WP appearances for the Wrexham based club, Dave left in April 2004 seemingly disgusted with club's sacking of manager and good friend Steve O' Shaughnessy
In July 2004, Dave joined Welshpool Town F.C., along with Jimmy Hunter and the Jefferies twins.
On 21 April 2007, Dave made his 150th career League of Wales appearance playing against Aberystwyth Town F.C.
Twice in the last two seasons, Cunnah turned down an approach to join Newtown
