Dariusz Makowski

Dariusz Radosław Makowski – is a habilitated doctor of engineering sciences and a university professor affiliated with Łódź University of Technology. He is employed at the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science within the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering. His scientific work focuses on embedded systems, control systems, data and image acquisition and processing, as well as solutions applied in scientific instrumentation and large-scale research projects.

Education

In 2001, he graduated from Łódź University of Technology with an M.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications. In 2006, he obtained his doctoral degree. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland Award in 2007 for the best doctoral thesis. In 2018, he received the degree of Habilitated Doctor in Technical Sciences in the field of Electronics. In subsequent years, he received numerous awards, including awards from the Rector of Łódź University of Technology.

Scientific activity

He has been professionally associated with Łódź University of Technology since 2002. He worked successively as an assistant, assistant professor, and since 2020 has held the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science Techniques. He completed research internships at institutions including Profactor GmbH in Steyr-Gleink, Austria, and the National Centre of Telemedicine in Tromsø, Norway.

His research is focused on the development of new hardware and software architectures for real-time data acquisition, transmission, and processing systems. He designs control and data acquisition systems used in large-scale scientific projects. His work is conducted in collaboration with international research institutions, including Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), ITER, European Spallation Source (ESS), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and DESY.

Between 2008 and 2011, he led a research team at Łódź University of Technology cooperating with DESY. Since 2010, he has participated in projects conducted in collaboration with ITER. Since 2016, he has led a team working with ESS on research concerning piezoelectric actuator control systems, and since 2019 he has managed a group collaborating with IPP. He is the initiator and founder of the CADAQ (Control and Data Acquisition) Laboratory operating within the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science Techniques at Łódź University of Technology. As part of cooperation with ITER, he also participates in projects carried out jointly with Japan's National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST) on diagnostic systems employing thermal imaging for tokamak monitoring.

He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications in the fields of electronics, control systems, and data acquisition. The results of his research and the hardware solutions he has developed have been applied in projects conducted by scientific institutions such as IPP, ITER, ESS, SLAC, CERN, HZDR, KIT, IHEP, DESY, and NRFI, as well as by high-technology companies including Rigaku, N.A.T. GmbH, and Bertin Technologies. His solutions have also been used in large-scale experiments such as Wendelstein 7-X, ITER, ASDEX Upgrade, FLASH, European XFEL, and ESS.

On behalf of Łódź University of Technology, he coordinates cooperation within the European EUROfusion programme.

He has served on the scientific committees of conferences such as Superconductivity and Particle Accelerators (SPAS) and Workshop on Longitudinal Diagnostics (WLD). He is currently a member of the scientific committees of Mixed Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems (MIXDES), Real Time Conference (RT), and MicroTCA Workshop for Industry and Research (MTWIR). He also acts as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals devoted to electronics, scientific instrumentation, and nuclear techniques.

He has supervised two completed doctoral dissertations and is currently supervising three additional Ph.D. projects.

He is the co-author of three patents.

In 2014, he was awarded the Bronze Cross of Merit, and in 2024 the Silver Cross of Merit.
