CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin

Club Sportiv Drobeta-Turnu Severin, commonly known as CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin or simply CS Drobeta, is a Romanian football club based in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți County, which competes in Liga III, the third tier of the Romanian football league system.

The club was founded in 2025 as a new football project intended to restore a senior team representing Drobeta-Turnu Severin in the national league system. It is legally and historically distinct from the former FC Drobeta-Turnu Severin, CFR Turnu Severin and CS Turnu Severin, although it was established with the stated purpose of continuing the football tradition of the city.

In its inaugural 2025–26 season, Drobeta won both the Liga IV Mehedinți championship and the Mehedinți County stage of the Cupa României, before defeating CS Sânandrei Timiș in the promotion play-off to earn promotion to Liga III.

History

Foundation and first season (2025–2026)

CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin was established in the summer of 2025 as a new senior football project for Drobeta-Turnu Severin. The initiative was supported by the local authorities and was presented as an attempt to restore competitive senior football in the city after more than a decade without a club from Drobeta-Turnu Severin in the national league system.

Former Romanian international Florin Șoavă, a native of Mehedinți County, was appointed as the club's first head coach, while Marian Balaci became president. The initial squad was built largely around players from Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Mehedinți, with promotion to Liga III established as the main sporting objective.

The club entered Liga IV Mehedinți for the 2025–26 season. Drobeta dominated the county championship and finished 1st with 76 points from 26 matches, five points ahead of runners-up CS Drobeta 2024. The title was officially secured by the end of May 2026, giving the club the right to contest the promotion play-off for Liga III.

Drobeta also enjoyed a successful campaign in the county stage of the Cupa României. After defeating CS Viitorul Cujmir 10–1 in the quarter-finals, the team advanced to the final, where it faced local rival CS Drobeta 2024 at Stadionul Municipal on 13 June 2026. CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin won the final 7–0, completing the county league-and-cup double in its first season of existence.

Promotion to Liga III (2026)

As Mehedinți County champion, CS Drobeta was drawn against CS Sânandrei Timiș, the representative of Timiș County, in the promotion play-off for the 2026–27 Liga III season.

The first leg was played on 20 June 2026 in Timiș County and ended with a 2–1 victory for Drobeta.

The return match was played on 27 June at Stadionul Municipal in Drobeta-Turnu Severin. A 1–1 draw was sufficient for CS Drobeta to win the tie 3–2 on aggregate and earn promotion to Liga III after only one season of existence.

The achievement returned Drobeta-Turnu Severin to the national senior league system after more than a decade. The previous city-based club to compete nationally had been CS Turnu Severin, which ceased activity in 2013.

First preparations for Liga III

Following promotion, Florin Șoavă left the head-coaching position. In July 2026, the club appointed Flavius Stoican as its new head coach ahead of its first Liga III campaign. Stoican, who was born in Mehedinți County, was assisted by Ștefan Bărboianu and Marius Avram.

The club stated that the squad for the 2026–27 season would retain a core of locally developed players while being strengthened with footballers capable of competing at national level. Stoican described the project as a long-term attempt to build a competitive team in Drobeta-Turnu Severin.

By winning the Mehedinți County Cup, Drobeta also qualified for the regional stage of the 2026–27 Cupa României. In the regional group stage, the club lost 0–3 to CSM Caransebeș before defeating Ripensia Timișoara 2–1. The results were not sufficient to qualify for the regional final.

As of August 2026, CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin is preparing for its inaugural season in Liga III and represents the principal senior football project in Drobeta-Turnu Severin.

Identity and relationship with former Severin clubs

CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin is a new organisation founded in 2025 and does not constitute the legal continuation of any of the major clubs that previously represented the city.

The historic CFR Turnu Severin was founded in 1928, won the 1942–43 Cupa României and was dissolved in 1958. Its identity was revived separately in 2018, with the revived club later returning to eleven-a-side football before withdrawing during the 2025–26 Liga IV season.

FC Drobeta-Turnu Severin traced its history to Drubeta Turnu Severin, founded in 1958. After several reorganisations and revivals, that football project finally ceased activity in 2011.

CS Turnu Severin originated outside the city as Gaz Metan CFR Craiova. It relocated to Drobeta-Turnu Severin in 2011, was promoted to Liga I in 2012 and ceased activity following relegation in 2013.

The current CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin is therefore a distinct legal and sporting entity. Nevertheless, its establishment in 2025 and subsequent promotion to Liga III have positioned it as the club currently carrying forward the senior football tradition of Drobeta-Turnu Severin.

Stadium

CS Drobeta-Turnu Severin plays its home matches at Stadionul Municipal in Drobeta-Turnu Severin. The Mehedinți County Football Association lists the stadium as the club's home ground with a capacity of approximately 20,000 spectators.

The stadium had previously served as the home venue of both FC Drobeta-Turnu Severin and CS Turnu Severin, including during the latter's 2012–13 Liga I campaign.
