Christopher Carter (artist)
Christopher Carter (born September 28, 1966) is an American contemporary sculptor. He currently lives and works as a fulltime artist in Miami, Florida.
Early life
At 15, he enrolled as an art student at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and received his BFA in general fine arts. He studied bronze casting and foundry work at Cortina, Italy, through a study-abroad program at University of Georgia. Before graduating from MICA he received a paid internship at the New Arts Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1995 he received his MFA in fine art/sculpture from UC Berkeley.
Art career
Carter worked as an Animator and Storyboard Artist in San Francisco, California, from 1992 to 2007, where he says he learned to work collaboratively.
Carter spent the summer of 2002 in New Zealand studying the art of the Maori people, particularly the wood carving tradition. Christopher subsequently produced a series of monumental carved columns, decorated with animistic totemic features. The Grand Rapids Art Museum purchased two of his "Totemic Columns" and placed them on permanent exhibition in the museum's entrance atrium.
Christopher makes significant use of found materials, reclaimed materials and discarded objects, in constructing his sculptures. One of his sources of material is from a Carver, Massachusetts building in which armaments for the War of 1812 were manufactured
In 2014 his work "Growth of a Nation" was selected for inclusion in collection and exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
