Charles Thorne

Charles Thorne (born October 27, 1952) is a Plastic Surgeon in New York City. A teacher and author in Plastic Surgery, he is best known for his clinical practice in specialized areas of reconstructive surgery such as Ear Reconstruction 1, Pediatric Plastic Surgery as well as Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.

Biography

Charles Hedges McKinstry Thorne 2 was born in Oakland, California. He is the son of Harold Wooster Thorne and Evelyn McKinstry Thorne. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley, California and then attended Yale College where he majored in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. While at Yale he played hockey and baseball. After receiving his B.A., he served for two years in the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa, where he was a secondary school teacher and then attended UCLA School of Medicine. He received his MD degree in 1981.

Career

After graduating from medical school, Charles Thorne did an internship and residency in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1982, after his internship, he married Dr. Alisa Chaklai 3, who had graduated from Harvard Medical School and was also a resident in training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed his training in Surgery in 1986 and then began his Plastic Surgery Residency at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the NYU Medical Center. Upon completion of his Plastic Surgery training, he spent an additional year as a Craniofacial Surgery fellow at NYU. 4

In 1989 he was invited to join the faculty of the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU and he also opened his private practice in New York City.

Thorne has participated in and held leadership positions in all the major Plastic Surgery societies. He was President of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons and is currently a Director on the American Board of Plastic Surgery and serves on the Board of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. In addition, he is the Cosmetic Surgery Section Editor for the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and served on the Editorial Board of that journal for several years.

Thorne is also an Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery with permanent tenure at the NYU School of Medicine. He has been practicing, teaching, writing about, and participating in the field of Plastic Surgery since 1989.

Thorne's practice is specialized and now consists of cosmetic plastic surgery and a few highly specialized areas of reconstructive surgery: ear reconstruction, pediatric plastic surgery including craniosynostosis and congenital nevi, and facial bone fractures.

Thorne’s resume includes numerous articles, presentations and two occasions he has edited the most frequently used textbook in Plastic Surgery (Grabb and Smith Plastic Surgery).

Teaching Charles Thorne has been involved with teaching since he finished his training. He was the Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency at NYU for 10 years and was the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Bellevue Hospital for 10 years. Currently he holds the rank of Associate Professor at the NYU School of Medicine. During his 20 years of teaching, and has won the award for Plastic Surgery Teacher of the Year on several occasions.
