Chai Chillum Chapati

Chai Chillum Chapati is a popular song among tourists in India. Enshrined in the song is the trinity of the tea, ganjika and bread, to which many Western tourists' sojourns are devoted. Several covers of the song exist but the identity of the original artist is subject to debate. Some attribute it to busker Lawrence Glaister but the true identity of the artist still remains a mystery. Steve Carey covers the song in his 1998 album Kingfisher Blue where he comments in the insert: "A big hit in India. Written by my friend Lawrence". Other versions include a reggae version ("connection") by the Swedish band "Super Deluxe".

Background

The song starts with the singer singing: I don't wanna go to Gokarna- it's too hot, the burning sand

but it clearly praises Gokarna for its "lovely people, living freely on the beach", the Holy Mother Cow walking on the sand and the blessings of Ganesha Baba.
