Central Maine Healthcare
Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) is a non-profit integrated healthcare delivery system based in Lewiston, Maine. It serves approximately 400,000 residents across central, western, and mid-coast Maine. Since February 16, 2026, it has been a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation.
History
Central Maine Healthcare was established in 1982 as an integrated healthcare system centered around Central Maine Medical Center.
On January 8, 2025, CMH announced an agreement with Prime Healthcare Foundation for the latter to become the sole corporate member and parent organization of Central Maine Healthcare. The transaction closed on February 16, 2026.
As part of the agreement, Prime Healthcare Foundation committed to investing $150 million over five years in facilities, services, infrastructure, and a new electronic medical records system. All CMH hospitals and facilities retained their original names and local leadership.

Central Maine Healthcare operates the following major facilities:
- Central Maine Medical Center (Lewiston) — 250-bed flagship hospital and Level III Trauma Center
- Bridgton Hospital (Bridgton) — Critical access hospital
- Rumford Hospital (Rumford) — Critical access hospital
- Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center
- Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute
- Maine College of Health Professions
- Rumford Community Home and Bolster Heights (long-term care and assisted living)
- More than 40 outpatient physician practices and clinics
Acquisition by Prime Healthcare Foundation
On February 16, 2026, Prime Healthcare Foundation completed its acquisition of Central Maine Healthcare, expanding its national network to 21 not-for-profit hospitals across eight states. This is considered one of the most significant healthcare investments in Maine in recent history.
Services
CMH provides a wide range of services, including primary care, specialty care, emergency and trauma services, cancer care, cardiovascular services, surgical services, and medical education.
