Carolyn North

Carolyn North is best known as the author of eight books, her healing practices of sound and movement, and her dedication as a social activist.

Career

Carolyn North was a scholar of 12th century manuscripts at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, a midwife in India, an English teacher at Fudan University in Shanghai, a member of a geological expedition to the Galapagos Islands, the author of eight books, and a gospel singer. She built the country’s first permitted rice strawbale house, demonstrating that straw was a viable alternative building material. She also founded one of the first perishable food gleaning programs in the country, The Daily Bread Project, in 1983, which has become the archetype for grassroots, volunteer organizations to re-distribute surplus food to the hungry. Her organization is still going strong after 23 years, has been copied in communities all across the country, and has brought her several awards of recognition.

Books

North’s most recent book, Ecstatic Relations: A Memoir of Love, focuses on the bonds created with people we love, which is explored through North’s personal experiences. This book is about the attractive force of the universe as it plays out in human lives. Specifically, she traces six relationships that resonated with the theme of the novel. Her other books include: Earth Below, Heaven Above; The Musicians and the Servants; Seven Movements, One Song; Crop Circles; Fringe Series; The Experience of a Lifetime; and Candle in the Night (a collaboration with Duncan Campbell).
