South Korea U-17 2007 World Cup
A fortuitous strike by Peruvian midfielder Carlos Bazalar earned his side all three points against the hosts in their opening Group A game of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007 this Saturday at the Suwon Sports Complex.
After a slow start, in which neither side risked too much, Peru gradually seized the initiative and capped their dominance with a most unusual goal by Bazalar. The midfielder got on the end of a measured cross with a diving header, only for his effort to come back off the post, strike him again while on the ground and end up in the back of the net. Spurred into action, the hosts did everything in their power to find a way back into the game, but it was not to be.
After the break, Peru camped for long periods in defence and looked to hit their opponents on the break, leaving the home side to go all out in attack. Their clearest chance to equalise came on 75 minutes, when striker Ui Beom Kim failed to convert a one-on-one with the Peruvian keeper. In the break that followed, Reimond Manco got through only to be upended by Yong Su Han, who was shown the red card for the challenge. With that any hopes the locals had of staging a comeback disappeared.
An 89th minute goal from Carlos Bazalar helped Peru to a 1-0 win over Costa Rica at the FIFA World Cup Stadium Jeju on Friday 24 August 2007, which took them to the top of the Group A standings.
In a game of few opportunities for either side, it was Peru who looked the more likely to score, aided by the excellent set-piece delivery of Daniel Sanchez and Gary Correa. Correa's free-kicks caused innumerable problems for the Ticos defence, but there was little in the way of end product from the South Americans.
After the break, Costa Rica began to impose themselves on the game and Diego Brenes and Marcos Urena both had chances to break the deadlock, yet Juan Jose Ore's side coped comfortably with their opponents attacking forays.
And with the clock ticking down, Bazalar nipped in at the far post to poke home Reimond Manco's free-kick, handing Peru all three points.
In recent years, the surname Bazalar has carried a lot of weight in Peruvian footballing circles, and the trend looks set to continue for some time yet. Currently starring for Peru at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007 is 17-year-old Carlos Bazalar, who is fast forging a reputation on the world stage.
The player charged with reading the Peru squad's message of hope to the people back home, still reeling from The Effects of a devastating earthquake, Bazalar subsequently caught the eye with his high-octane performances and two vital goals that helped drive the Jotitas into the Round of 16.
Trivia
The son of Juan Carlos Bazalar, one peruvian footballer, the youngster has quite an act to follow. Bazalar senior won the 2003 Copa Sudamericana with Cuzco outfit Cienciano, as well as the 2004 Recopa Sudamericana, contested by the winners of the previous year's Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Still going strong at 39, the veteran midfield man captained Peru at the Copa America Venezuela 2007.
Peruvian diaries like El Comercio say that Carlos Bazalar will go to play to Cienciano Del Cuzco with his father Juan Carlos Bazalar, or he will go to play on a team of Europe.
