Calum Paterson

Calum Paterson is a Scottish venture capitalist and football administrator. He co-founded Scottish Equity Partners (SEP) in 2000 and was its managing partner for 25 years, becoming chairman and senior partner in 2025. Paterson chaired the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVCA) in 2018–19 and was previously a director of travel technology company Skyscanner. He became chairman of Heart of Midlothian F.C. in 2025, succeeding Ann Budge.

Early life and education

Paterson was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Linlithgow. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 1985 with a BA (Hons) in economics and accounting, returning to the university to complete an MBA in 1993.

He trained as a chartered accountant with Ernst & Young before joining the Scottish Development Agency on its management development programme. He later became part of the senior leadership team at Scottish Enterprise and ran its investment arm, Scottish Development Finance.

Business career

Paterson co-founded Scottish Equity Partners in 2000, when the business was spun out of Scottish Enterprise, and became its managing partner. SEP became an independent venture capital business in August that year. Its investment focus later developed from venture capital into growth investment in software and technology companies in the United Kingdom and Europe.

SEP first invested in Edinburgh-based travel search company Skyscanner in 2007. Paterson was a non-executive director of the company before its acquisition by Ctrip in December 2016. He also chaired SEP's investment committee.

Paterson was vice-chairman of the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association before becoming its chairman for 2018–19. The University of Strathclyde named him its Alumnus of the Year in 2017, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. By 2025, he was also serving as a Senior Enterprise Fellow at Strathclyde.

In October 2025, SEP announced that Paterson would leave the managing partner role after 25 years and become chairman and senior partner. By that point, the firm had raised seven funds and invested in more than 160 businesses.

Heart of Midlothian

In 2025, Ann Budge announced that she would step down as chairman of Heart of Midlothian at the club's annual general meeting in December. Following a recruitment process carried out by the club's nominations committee, the Hearts board approved Paterson as its new non-executive chairman on 31 October, subject to ratification by shareholders at the AGM.

Paterson took over from Budge at the December 2025 AGM. As chairman, he leads the club's board of directors, which oversees strategic decisions, governance and the club's long-term interests. Paterson was already a long-standing member of the Foundation of Hearts when he became chairman.

After Derek McInnes left Hearts for Rangers in June 2026, Paterson and sporting director Graeme Jones took part in the recruitment process for his replacement, interviewing a number of candidates. Wouter Vrancken was appointed head coach on 25 June.

In August 2026, Hearts announced that chief executive Andrew McKinlay would leave the club at the end of the month following discussions with the board. While a replacement was sought, Paterson was to work closely with the club's executive team.
