Berthe, Duchess of Rohan

Princess Berthe of Rohan-Guèmènè, (4 May 1782 - 22 February 1841) was an 18th century French noblewoman and the duchess consort of both Bouillon and Rohan upon her husband’s accession.

Biography

Born on May 4th, 1782 birthplace unknown. She was the only child of Charles Alain, Prince of Guéméné and his wife, Louise Aglaé de Conflans d'Armentiere. Her paternal grandmother was governess to the children of Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette.

She married her paternal uncle, Louis Victor Meriadec de Rohan, the Duke of Bouillon on the 23rd of July, 1800. This marriage produced no children, or unconsummated. Consequently, when her father died in 1836, he left no direct descendants, and the primary Rohan titles eventually passed to her cousins. The marriage was intended to consolidate the family's titles and holdings during their exile.

After the French Revolution began, which significantly shaped her life, she and her family emigrated to the Austrian Empire in the year 1791.

Her family purchased Sychrov Castle in Bohemia in 1820. Berthe lived there for the remainder of her life and died at the castle on February 22, 1841. She is buried in the Rohan Vault at the estate.

Her portrait by oils, painted by Joseph Lecocq remains in the collection of Sychrov Castle.
