Gonaranao Mapandi

Gonaranao Pangcat Mapandi Sr. (September 9, 1943 – December 6, 2002) was a Filipino Muslim physician and founder of the Mapandi Memorial College and Medical Center in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, Philippines.

Early life and education

Mapandi was born on September 9, 1943 in Saduc, Marawi City, to Sultan Mapandi Danday Batugan and Hadja Moomina Pangcat. He attended Batangan Saguiaran Elementary School and Lanao School of Arts and Trade in Lanao del Sur. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Far Eastern University in 1973 and a Master of Public Administration degree from Mindanao State University in 1984.

Career

After passing the Philippine physician licensure examination, Mapandi was appointed City Health Officer of Marawi City in 1974. In 1973, he and his wife established Clinica Mapandi in Raya Saduc, Marawi City. The clinic was later relocated to its current location at 048 Buanda Boulevard (formerly Marcos Boulevard), Saduc, Marawi City and renamed Mapandi Memorial Hospital in 1975. It was eventually expanded into the Mapandi Memorial College and Medical Center.

The institution became closely identified with its location in Marawi City, and the surrounding area came to be known as "Mapandi". The nearby iconic bridge that was widely referenced during the infamous Siege of Marawi in 2017 and is now commonly called "Mapandi Bridge."

Personal life

Mapandi married Bolawan Untao on September 21, 1969. They had five children. He ran for mayor of Marawi City but was unsuccessful.

Death

Mapandi died on December 6, 2002.
