Bahauddeen Muhammed Nadwi

Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi (Malayalam: ഡോ. ബഹാഉദ്ദീൻ മുഹമ്മദ് നദ്‌വി, Arabic: الدكتور بهاءالدين محمد الندوي) is a Sunni Islamic religious scholar and a Prominent Muslim Academician from the Indian state of Kerala. He is the Vice Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University. He is regarded as the Intellectual Founding Father of DHIU. He is the Current State General Secretary of Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyathul Mu'allimeen Central Council, a supreme council of religious teachers in Kerala. He did his PhD from Calicut University, Kerala. He is a member of International Union of Muslim Scholars based at Qatar. He serves as the Editor in Chief of Islamic Insight International Journal of Islamic Studies, one of the famous authentic and academic journals published By Indian Muslims. In 2011 December Nadwi elected as the Executive Member of National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education, a constitutional board under the ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.

Early life

Born in Kooriyad, a village in the Kottakkal Malappuram District of Kerala, on 22 April 1951, Nadwi hails from a Islamic Religious family, 'Kunnakkadan'. His father, Al Haj Muhammed Jamaluddeen Musliyar, was very pious as well as his mother, Fathima Hajjumma, was the daughter of Kooriyad Thenu Musliyar, a famous Sufi Scholar lived at 20th Century in Malabar.

Education

After completing the primary level education, Nadwi did his first Diploma in Arabic Teachers Examination offered by Government of Kerala in 1971. In 1974 he achieved the bachelor degree Maulavi Fadhil (in Shareea’) from Jamia Nooriya Arabiyya, Pattikkad, one of the oldest traditional Islamic Colleges in South India. He persuaded his Afzal ul-Ulema Degree in Arabic Language and Literature from the Arabic Department of University of Calicut, Kerala. In 1981 he completed his Alimiya Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulema, Lucknow, UP and the Fazeelath Post Graduation Degree of the same Nadwatul Ulema in 1983. In 1987 he completed his Masters Degree in Arabic Language and Literature from the Aligarh Muslim University. Bahauddeen Muhammed's Doctoral Research (PhD) was completed in 1994 from the Department of Arabic, University of Calicut. Two years after, in 1996 he was honored with the Post Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Calicut. After two years in 1998 Nadwi was invited by the Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt to complete the Special Correspondence Diploma for the Islamic Scholars and he completed the prescribed course from Egypt.

Positions

Nadwi is the founding and current Vice Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University, Kerala. He was the Vice Principal of Darul Huda Islamic Academy from 1986 and when Darul Huda was upgraded into an Islamic University, he became the first Vice Chancellor of the first Islamic University in South India. He is the Director of the Council for the Islamic Propagation, Kerala from 1989 onwards. In 2011 he was elected as the Kerala Scholar who got the membership in International Union of Muslim Scholars based at Qatar. He is the current Secretary General of All Kerala Mu’allims' (Teachers) Federation, Chelari, Malappuram, Kerala, India and the Executive Member of National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education, a constitutional board under the ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.

He is the Editor in Chief of an authentic academic journal, Islamic Insight International journal of Islamic Studies, which is published by the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Darul Huda Islamic University. Along with Islamic Insight, he edits two Malayalam Monthlies: 1. Thelitcham Monthly, Hidaya Nagar, Chemmad, Tirurangadi, Kerala, India. 2. Santhushta Kudumbam Monthly, SKJMCC, Chelari, Kerala, India

Awards and achievements

Nadwi was honored with many awards and felictitations. Some of them are Internationally Important, while some are nationally and locally important. In 2003 Nadwi was selected as the Participant in the International Visitor Programme organized by the Department of State, Govt. of U.S.A. In 2006 he was elected as Participant for the Dubai Holy Qura’n Award Speeches organized by Dubai Government. In 2009 he was invited to U.A.E as the Guest of HH The President of UAE for Da’wa in Holy Ramadan in August to September Months. He was the Participant in the 19th and 20th Conferences of The Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Cairo which were held in the Hijri Years of 1428 and 1429 respectively. He also participated in the fifth General Conference of The International Islamic Leadership, Tripoli, Libya.

Nadwi won the Jaihoon Award for educational, religious and cultural contributions in 2009. The award was proclaimed by the online television channel Jaihoon TV. In 2008 he selected for the Al Mahabba Excellency Award, from Kuwait Keral Sunni Muslim Council. The older awards presented to Nadwi includes Al Makhdoom Award for the work : Islamic Propagation in 1981. In 2012 February Nadwi was honored by Al Huda Excellency award proclaimed by Al Ain Sunni Youth Centre, United Arab Emirates. In 2013 January, he won Kottumala Usthad Memorial Faizee Pratibha Award for his committed contributions to the Islamic Educational field. The Award was given by Jamia Nooria Arabiyya, Pattikkad, Kerala.

Nadwi was elected as one of the world's most influential Muslim personalities in 2012 by the The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, Amman, Jordan. He is the only one Muslim scholar from Kerala who named among the most influential Muslim Scholars of the world.

Major works

Nadwi has published about 50 books in Arabic, English and Malayalam languages. Nadwi's works remark a vast and wide aspect of Qur'anic Sciences, Islamic Jurisprudence, Prophetic Hadith, Educational system, Sufism, Comparative Religions, Christianity, Arabic Language and Literature, Islamic History etc. He has translated Holy Qur'an along with some other Arabic Classical texts into Malayalam language .
