Avril Cherasard

Avril Cherasard is a Bahamian-American businesswoman and politician serving as a member of the Miramar City Commission in Miramar, Florida, representing Seat 3. Elected in the March 2025 municipal election, she is the first Bahamian-American woman elected to the Commission.

Early life and education

Cherasard was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, with paternal roots in the settlement of Barraterre, Exuma. She moved to the United States at age 16 on an academic scholarship to Florida Memorial University, graduating summa [...] laude in 2001. She later earned a master's degree in public administration from Nova Southeastern University. She has lived in Miramar since purchasing property in the city in 2010.

Career

Cherasard began her career in public service, working for the Florida Department Of Health and the Social Security Administration. She later moved into real estate, becoming a licensed broker and investor and serving as a Governor of the Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors Association.

Political career

Cherasard announced her candidacy for Miramar Commission Seat 3 in January 2025 at a campaign launch event, running on a platform emphasizing housing affordability, economic development, youth programs, and senior resources. She faced Nari Tomlinson, a former collegiate athlete and educator, in the March 11, 2025 municipal election for the seat previously held by Alexandra P. Davis, who left the Commission after her election to the Broward County Commission. Cherasard won the election and was sworn in as commissioner in 2025.

Prior to her election, she served on Miramar's Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. In March 2026, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson publicly recognized Cherasard's work in housing and civic engagement as part of a broader tribute to Miramar's commission leadership.

Recognition

In June 2025, Cherasard was presented with the Key to the City of Barraterre, Exuma, during the 40th Annual Barraterre Homecoming Festival & Regatta, in recognition of her status as the first female Bahamian-American elected to the Miramar City Commission. In July 2025, she received the Glass Ceiling Award from the Treasure Coast Bahamian Connection Organization (TCBCO), presented alongside other honorees including Katherine Fernandez Rundle.
