History
The American International School – Chennai (AISC) was established in 1995 through a bilateral agreement between the Governments of the United States of America and India. The school and its program was designed to provide instruction, activities, and facilities for families on expatriate assignments in Chennai. It was also meant to serve as a demonstration center of U.S. educational methods and practices.
Academic Accreditation and Memberships
AISC is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS, The Netherlands), the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA, Philadelphia, U.S.A.), and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO, England).
Facilities
Several energy and cost-saving features have been incorporated into the design, and the school is able to operate virtually independently of local utilities supply, if necessary. Measures like rainwater harvesting, recycling, roof insulation, and an innovative cold storage system to reduce peak-time energy consumption all contribute to healthy, environmentally friendly surroundings for the occupants. Use of natural, local building materials has been maximized throughout the campus for their compatibility to the climate and colors of southern India.
All classrooms are air-conditioned, as are the sports hall, health center, cafeteria, and administrative offices. The layout of the buildings takes advantage of the sea breeze, while water features, ample trees, and shrubberies help maintain a cool environment in the public areas.
The building has been designed to meet the requirements of Seismic Zone 3. The interior walls are reinforced horizontally and vertically. The windows are made of safety glass and the windows facing the street are also laminated to prevent shattering.
