Overview
This telenovela takes place in 1895 in São Paulo. Cecilia, the main character, is obliged to marry Fernando, whom she loathes. Her father, nobleman Lineu Maciel, gambled away their whole fortune and the only way of paying his debts is the marriage of Cecilia with rich man. After wedding she moves with her husband to his plantation she detests. Furthermore, she cannot forget her former fiancé, Edmundo, who studies in Europe. Their engagement was canceled, because of his greedy father, who did not allow his son to marry ruined girl.
Cecilia's pride and feeling of superiority due to coming from aristocratic family make her despise her husband, whom she regards as an unrefined peasant. She is also generally disliked by his family and workers. Their marriage remains unconsummated. Tension between them is increased by a mysterious room in the shed, which Fernando keeps closed from his whole family.
Return of Edmundo magnifies conflict between Cecilia and Fernando, bringing them on the verge of separation. Furthermore, their relatives and friends start getting anonymous letters, revealing important secrets, but also spreading disgusting lies, causing anxiety and arousing suspicions.
