Jason Lee Jones (born March 13, 1977) is an American politician from California. Jones, a Democrat, is a candidate in the for theUnited States House of Representatives seeking to represent the northern two-thirds of San Mateo County and a small portion of southwest San Francisco.
Biography
Jones was born in Duluth, Georgia on March 13, 1977 to a family of farmers and raised in Maysville. His mothers' parents were highly influential in his early life. Their land, upon which the old family home sits, includes cattle, a produce farm, a nursery, and plenty of horses from pasture boarding. As a testament to the small size of his hometown, Jones was delivered by the same doctor who delivered his brother, mother, and aunt.
Jones grew up on a rural dirt road and spent his childhood farming, fishing, and hunting. Though his family is predominately Methodist, his mother exposed both Jones and his brother to other faiths in an attempt to avoid indoctrinating them with any particular religious view. Most of the men in his family were former military personnel, and for much of his youth, Jones was encouraged to pursue a career in the military and public service.
Political Life
While still in high school, Jones first became involved in politics, working on the reelection campaign of Georgia Agricultural Commissioner Tommy Irvin (D) despite the fact that the electorate was heavily Republican.
In 1994, Jones had his neck and back broken in a near-fatal auto accident. After more than a year of recovery and with his hopes of a military career dashed, he worked as a canvasser for Georgia Democrat Max Cleland's senate campaign and then moved to San Francisco. Shortly after his arrival in the Bay Area in 1996, Jones discovered success as a web developer during the dot-com boom. When the tech industry went downhill, Jones again turned to politics in 2003, joining the presidential campaigns of General Wesley Clark (D), Senator John Edwards (D-NC), and Senator John Kerry (D-MA). After the 2004 election, Jones enrolled at City College of San Francisco, later transferring to San Francisco State University where he is currently a student.
Jones launched the exploratory phase of his campaign for the United States House of Representatives in January 2008 when Congressman Tom Lantos announced he would not seek reelection after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Jones officially announced his candidacy on February 1, 2008.
Lantos died on February 11, and on February 12, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, as required by law, announced that a will be held April 8 for a replacement to finish Lantos' term.
