Floren MacDonald, full name Florence Elizabeth MacDonald, is one of the two frontmen (along with Philip Burley) of the Cornish anti-folk band The Red Army. She is the lead female vocalist, as well as playing piano, trumpet, and more recently, kazoo and accordion. She is a professional, classically trained singer and pianist, and is best known for her fractious relationship with her co-frontman Philip.

Early life

She was born in Portsmouth on September 20th 1987, and moved location several times, living in Scotland, Birmingham, Cornwall and other parts of the United Kingdom before eventually ending up back in Cornwall in 2000. She attended Truro College from 2004-2006, obtaining a good grade in the International Bacheloriate.

The Red Army

The Red Army was formed on February 17th 2004, when MacDonald joined forces with Philip and Stephen Burley. At the time of writing, they have played over 200 gigs.

Musical Style And Influence
MacDonald's vocal technique, particularly recently, bears a lot of credit to anti-folk singer Regina Spektor. Her voice is often described as angelic, and her classical training is apparent in her technique. MacDonald has become much more of an evident songwriter in the past year, and although Burley still dominates the bands creative force, her expanse of new material could re-set the balance. For the moment, however, the majority of her songwriting credibility appears on co-written Burley/MacDonald tracks, particularly the critically acclaimed "Money Grabbing Scum".

Trivia

*MacDonald is noted for her enthusiasm for the work of Joanna Newsom.

*MacDonald has described herself as a philanderer.

*MacDonald claims to be unaware of punk music, despite composing anti-folk songs, a sub-genre of punk.

*MacDonald considers her mobile telephone number a hotline for musical and moral issues, and urges members of the public to ring her to "chat" about issues of all kinds.

*MacDonald's heroine and role model is Pippi Longstocking.

What is the Blockwork Road?

The Blockwork Road runs from the post box on the telephone pole (on the Old Weymouth to Lulworth Road that passes north of Ringstead Bay) to Holworth House. It is 250 metres of road laid in two strips of interlocking concrete blocks.

25 Years and still going strong

The first sections of the road were placed 25 years ago. The most recent sections were placed 10 years ago. The only maintenance required has been cutting back the vegetation either side of the road and replacing shoulder material over a short section where it has been dislodged by vehicles being driven off-the-blocks.

Apart from the section placed 10 years ago, it is difficult to determine the relative age of the sections. The only discernable wear is near the post box where hard sharp material from the adjacent loose surface has abraded the surface of the blocks through the passage of vehicles - but even this is only slight. The section placed 10 years ago is obvious because it is of a different type of block.

There is no apparent reason why the blocks should not last at least another 25 years - or even longer.

Blood Gatherer is:
Hawk McLancaster Esq., Vocals, Etc.
Dalila Unfortunate, Vocals, Programing
Rasputin Ecks, Lead Guitar
Sur Darius, Rhythm Guitar, Vocals

Biography

Blood Gatherer is a Heavy Metal and Experimental artist from the Transylvania Region of Romania, present day Ţara Moţilor. Blood Gatherer is a front name for the musician Hawk McLancaster Esq. who was resposible for all of the bands music, mixing, and production until recently. McLancaster has been described by the local media as a reclusive individual who partakes in bizzarre rituals in his abandoned old world Castle turned home. While not much is known of McLancasters history, it has been reported that he can trace his ancestry back to Elizabeth Bathory-Nadasdy, the Hungarian Blood Countess.

In October of 2007, Hawk McLancaster Esq. added three members to the Blood Gatherer line-up. Dalila Unfortunate is the groups female vocalist, and sometimes does programming and keyboards along with McLancaster. Rasputin Ecks, sometimes called "The Facemelter" because of his blistering guitar solos, is the lead guitarist for the band. The third member added was Sur Darius to play rhythm guitar and provide back-up vocals.

Like McLancaster, very little is known about these new members of the band. It is believed that these new members are not from Romania, as McLancaster traveled exstensively looking for new band mates and a new translator.

Controversy

After extensive touring in late 2002 McLancaster had an altercation with fellow Romanian rock group Monster Brigade and Escapees of the Universe. The altercation reportedly occurred at a Transylvanian music award conference when Hawk McLancaster Esq. claimed he would "Crush the seed of unborn children." Hawk McLancaster has been reported as saying "This controversy is more like a NON-traversy."
