The Wainwright Gridiron Challenge (WGC) is an annual flag football game played in Tacoma, Washington, United States. The WGC draws some of the top athletes in the Tacoma area. Additionally, some athletes have traveled from as far away as Covington, WA. The Wainwright Gridiron Challenge is unique in that all player fees go towards funding extraterrestrial research, and consistently raises more money than any other organization in the State of Washington.
See the WGC Official Logo
Structure
The WGC is made up of two random teams. Team Captains are assigned by Commissioner Wainwright, and the captains take turns choosing players.
The WGC Format is a best-of-seven format. The first team to win four games wins the Challenge.
Rules
The WGC follows established Flag Football rules. Players must have their flag belt removed entirely in order for the play to be ruled dead. The offense can huddle once per drive, while the defense can rush once per drive. When a defensive player rushes, they must yell rush loud enough for all to hear. If the defense does not rush, they must count to seven alligators and then any defensive player may rush the quarterback.
The offense is allowed to run five plays, in an attempt to score a touchdown. If the offense fails to score a touchdown, the ball is turned over to the other team.
Competition from other Leagues
The Wainwright Gridiron Challenge is the premiere Flag Football Championship Series in Tacoma, WA. Other leagues have attempted to form tournaments as well, most notably the Folster Turkey Bowl Classic, founded in 2009 by Eamon Foley, of Tacoma, WA. While the Folster TBC enjoyed a brief window of success, it was quickly overshadowed by Zeb Wainwright’s WGC. There are some differences between the two leagues that should be noted.
- The WGC is played on a professional, level field with proper drainage. The TBC is played at Manitou Park, in Tacoma, WA, where the field is lumpy, and sometimes has tire tracks through it. Trees are often in the way of players.
- WGC Athletes are, for the most part, far superior to the TBC athletes.
- The WGC recently signed a long-term contract with ESPN.
- Where the TBC actively seeks out recruits, Commissioner Wainwright gets to hand pick every player in his league.
Notable Records
*Most touchdowns in a game: Zeb Wainwright (7)
*Most interceptions in a game: Zeb Wainwright (13)
*Most yards receiving in a game: Zeb Wainwright (195)
*Most passing yards in game: Zeb Wainwright (245, 140 to himself)

Influence
In an interview with Hip Hop DX, Tech said that the inspiration for the song was his mother's illness, she had just been diagnosed with Lupus and was placed in an insane asylum at the time. His 1 year old nephew dying in a car crash also had an influence. When asked whether or not he believed in god, Tech N9ne responded with "I really hope there is, man, because I pray to Him every - I pray to It, Her, or Him every night. Whatever It may be, I pray every night, I pray every day, before I go on stage. I have faith that there is something there greater than us. I have no proof. There’s signs like the sun, and the moon, and birth of a baby. There are signs there’s something greater, but there’s always room for doubt". According to Tech, his mom is a devout christian.
