The Law of Love Ministries is a non-profit organization in the State of Indiana that exists to help people help others. The ministry is based on the scriptural principle of the Law of Love.
The Law of Love consists of two commands:
1. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself.
The first half of this law is originally seen in the Law of Moses in the book of Deuteronomy.
The second half of the law is common among many cultures and often referred to today as the golden rule. In scripture this law was first seen in the book of [http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%206:5&version=NIVUK Deuteronomy 6:5] the second half first seen in [http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%2019:18&version=NIVUK Leviticus 18:19].
“Jesus lived by love, and He made love the only litmus test for determining who were His disciples when He said in [http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2013:35&version=NIVUK John 13:35] “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.””
Most of the Old Testament in the Bible is devoted to the Law of Moses. Many today feel that they are still bound to that law or some pieces of it. When Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected, He fulfilled the Mosaic Law. Not only did He fulfill it that law but He was established as the High Priest.
Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, not from the tribe of Levi. He is not a High Priest in the Levitial Priesthood. In Hebrews it is established that Jesus is the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. “Believers in Jesus are to live by the law associated with the priesthood of our High Priest, not the law of someone else’s priesthood.”
“The Lord has revealed in the Scriptures the law of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, of which Jesus is High Priest. It is the law the Lord is calling us to live by. It is the oldest and the highest law of God; it is beautifully simple and easy to understand because it is the only law that has no exceptions; it is the law that he writes on our hearts and our minds. It is the Law of Love."
As beautifully simple as the Law of Love is in principle it is not easy in practice. There are hundreds of sermons that can talk to you more about what a life of Love looks like.
Love is a fulfilling of the law, is a 3 part series by John Piper focused in Romans. It offers great examples of what a life of Love looks like.
Let us pursue love. It is an enormous, all-encompassing reality. It is not to be part of life, but all of life. Let everything be done in love. Let the mindset of patience, kindness, contentment, humility, meekness, politeness, deference, forgiveness, joy, truthfulness, hope, endurance—let your heart and mind overflow with these traits of love. In everything you do, let there be love.
Tim Keller the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church discuss the law in an article on his website:
Paul says we are not ‘under law’ but ‘under grace’ (Romans 6:15.) But what does that mean as far as having an obligation to submit to God’s will as written in his Word? Do we still have to obey the law? Absolutely.
To be ‘under the law’ refers not to law obeying but law relying (Galatians 3:10-11). When we think we can win God’s approval through our moral performance and obedience becomes a crushing burden, then we are ‘under law.’ But when we learn that Christ has fulfilled the law for us and that now we who believe in him are secure in God’s love, then we naturally want to delight, resemble, and know the One who has done this. How can we do this? By turning to the law! Paul puts it this way. Though he is not under the law, ‘I am not free from God’s law, but I am under Christ’s law” (1 Corinthians 9:21.) Though he is not ‘under’ the law (as a way to earn salvation) he now is freed to see the beauties of God’s law as fulfilled in Christ, and submits to it as way of loving his Savior.'
