Zeitz Foundation for Intercultural Ecosphere Safety

The Zeitz Foundation for Intercultural Ecosphere Safety (I.E.S.) is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing projects that promote and contribute to the sustainability of the Ecosphere, with a special focus on areas of high conservation value. Founded in 2008 by Puma CEO and Chairman, Jochen Zeitz, the Foundation invests in and promotes a diversity of activities in the areas of conservation, community development, commerce, and culture.
The Zeitz Foundation also supports a certification system and alliance of "Global Ecosphere Retreats" (G.E.R.). Certified G.E.R. form an alliance across the globe of privately-managed natural land areas — both tourist and non-tourist — of a high conservation value which are dedicated to realizing the highest standards of sustainability.
For a sustainable organization or operation to become a certified G.E.R., they must meet a specific set of criteria and submit to assessments in 4 dimensions (conservation, community, culture, commerce). These G.E.R. are tested against the highest standards in sustainability and demonstrate strong commitments to responsibly meeting the needs of the environment and their communities. Through the G.E.R. the Zeitz Foundation promotes and awards sustainable tourism and sustainable eco-ventures when and where appropriate.
Projects
In addition to establishing and supporting the G.E.R. certification system and alliance, the Zeitz Foundation’s evolving list of initiatives include renewable energy projects, initiatives addressing human-wildlife conflict resolution, natural resource management programs, the support of a community school in the Laikipia District in Kenya, and the sponsorship of a community soccer team, also in Kenya. All of their projects and initiatives work towards achieving sustainability and enhancing livelihoods.
The Foundation has representatives in Germany, the UK, the United States, and Kenya.
