List of state health care reform groups in the United States
|
This is a list of state health care reform groups in the United States that are working at the state level and whose primary focus is health care reform. Health care reform is a major public policy topic in the United States, but almost all of the reforms have been occurring with the states individually and not in the U.S. as a whole. The health care system in the U.S. is the most expensive in the world, with the U.S. spending more on health care, both as a proportion of and on a per capita basis, than any other nation. Current estimates put U.S. health care spending at approximately 16% of GDP. In 2007, the U.S. spent a projected $2.26 trillion on health care, or $7,439 per person. Health care costs are rising faster than wages or inflation, and the health share of GDP is expected to continue its historical upward trend, reaching 19.5 percent of GDP by 2017. Americans without health insurance coverage at some time during 2006 totaled about 16% of the population, or 47 million people.
These groups often address issues such as universal health insurance, publicly-funded health care, single-payer health care, the high cost of health insurance, and the high number of people who are uninsured. The following organizations serve as sources of information and advocates for health care reform in their respective states.
