Yuri Vieira

Yuri Vieira Santos (São Paulo, state of São Paulo, 1975) is a Brazilian writer and cinema director.
Biography
He is the grandson of fazendeiros from the state of Goiás and was grown in three cities: Goiânia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
In his teenhood he lived in Ecuador, where he mountaineered some active volcanoes: Pichincha (4800 m), Tungurahua (5060 m) and Cotopaxi (5890 m).

Writer
Hilda Hilst's house
For two years he was a resident at writer Hilda Hilst's home in São Paulo. He was her secretary and webmaster. He describes the experience as being in the eye of the hurricane in his book O exorcista na Casa do Sol: Relatos do último pupilo de Hilda Hilst (en: The exorcist at the House of the Sun: stories from Hilda Hilst's last pupil). Hilda was a host to many proeminent writers - the poet Bruno Tolentino was a major figure there - and had 70 dogs at the house. However, despite her public image, Yuri says that she was not the luxurious woman many think.
Hilda herself praised Yuri's writings.
The influence of Olavo de Carvalho
He was a pupil of the Brazilian writer Olavo de Carvalho (1947-2022) for 16 years, from 2006 to January 2022, when Olavo died. Olavo was an essential influence on him.
Yuri is a prolific writer among Brazilian Conservatives. However, his style is comic and informal.
In 2013 Yuri was a guest at the II International Meeting of Brazilian Writers, in Richmond, Virginia (USA).
Short stories
His main book, A Tragicomédia Acadêmica - Contos Imediatos do Terceiro Grau (en: The College Tragicomedy: direct short stories from the third degree), was praised by writers and literary critics Bruno Tolentino, Millôr Fernandes, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Olavo de Carvalho, Rodrigo Constantino, Paulo Briguet, Sérgio Coutinho, Ryoki Inoue and Martim Vasques da Cunha.
His 2017 short stories book A sábia ingenuidade do Dr. João Pinto Grande (en: The smart ingenuity of Mr. John Biggus Dickus) was mistaken for sexual humor, because of the ambiguous title. It was a major success and praised by literary critic Rodrigo Gurgel.
Oceanos Award 2018
Yuri was nominated to the Oceanos Literary Award 2018, funded by Portugal Telecom.
Theatre plays
Yuri is also a theatre play writer. He was a pupil of Nelson Pereira dos Santos. In 2011 one of his plays was selected for the Festival de Brasília.
Cinema director
Yuri is also a cinema director. He earned an award for his 2007 short "Espelho" ("Mirror").
