Xeros Ltd. is a manufacturing company which specializes in laundry cleaning machines. The name "Xeros" is derived from the brand's polymer based cleaning patent. The company is currently developing a technology that is designed to use less water. The cleaning technology that Xeros is designing has been developed over a 30 year period by Leeds University professor Stephen Burkinshaw. The company is working to get the machines out by the end of the year however the first models have been designed for commercial consumers. Cleaning technology The cleaning technology uses polymer technology where clothes are tumbled in the drum with small, half centimeter beads instead of water. The beads are made out of nylon that apparently traps the soil and grime. 44 pounds of beads are used per cycle. The beads are small enough to pass through the garments and remove stains stuck in the fibers. The machine consists of two drums-an inner drum containing the clothes, and an outer drum. In the space between the two drums are the beads. The mesh material of the inner drum allows the beads to come into it during the cycle. Upon finishing the cycle, the machine somehow removes 99.95 percent of the beads to the space between the drums. The user then removes the clothes, passing them over a built in vacuum that pulls off any remaining beads. The beads are reused for up to 100 loads. The system design would reduce water usage approximately 90% with regard to clothes washing. The machine does not require a rinse or spin cycle, so Xeros claims it uses 2% of the energy of a normal machine It also eliminates the need for a clothes dryer. The system is not ready for launch as it is currently only a prototype and has not been tested in a home use setting.
