LANGUAGE SKILLS FOR EXAMS
Introduction
These are intensive course for Secondary School Students with Language Difficulties by
Speech and Language Therapist Gillian Barr and Secondary School Teacher Stephen O’Brien.
It was set up in late 2010 with the intention of helping students with Language Difficulties.
By using educational techniques it hopes to help students in small groups to overcome these difficulties and learn.
Information
It is based around research that has shown that young people with language difficulties are ‘at risk of underachievement in key secondary school assessments’.
Often, students with language difficulties do not comprehend the language contained in exam questions. Therefore, they may miss out on the opportunity to display knowledge they possess. This can occur in English exams, but also in other language loaded subjects such as Geography, History, Business and Science subjects. Even Maths questions can contain terminology and language concepts that cause confusion. These students also have frequent difficulty in organising and sequencing their thoughts in writing essay type questions.
This course that is offered aims to improve these skills, helping these students to reach their potential in examinations.
Course tutor Gillian Barr has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in the HSE with students with language difficulties for more than ten years, and Stephen O’Brien has five years Second Level teaching experience, experience in tutoring students with learning difficulties and a Masters qualification in Education. Their collaboration results in a unique approach in targeting academic language difficulties.
