Wrongway Feldman

Wrongway Feldman is a fictional World War I fighter pilot, played by actor Hans Conried, who appeared in two episodes of the TV sitcom Gilligan's Island.
Background
Feldman got his nickname for always flying the wrong way; during the war, he bombed his own airbase. He told the castaways that he survived on the island with "matches, magazines, and 64 bottles of Scotch." Wrongway appears in two episodes during the first season. Both episodes are in black and white.
The character is a reference to aviator who, in 1938, was supposed to complete a transcontinental roundtrip flight by flying from Brooklyn, New York back to Long Beach, California, but flew to Ireland instead.
First appearance
Wrongway is discovered on the island in Episode 5 ("Wrongway Feldman"), having been marooned there himself after landing due to mechanical failure during an around-the-world flight many years earlier in his plane "The Spirit of the Bronx". He was once employed by Thurston Howell Industries as a test pilot and set a record of flying from Chicago to Los Angeles—although he had intended to fly to New Orleans.
fixes Wrongway's plane, which the aviator claims that he will fly to Hawaii and get them rescued. When things continually go awry with the plane, Wrongway confesses to Gilligan that he has been sabotaging the plane because he is now afraid to fly.
offers to learn how to fly by instruction from Wrongway and take his place, all this in secret from the others to keep them from finding out about Wrongway's cowardice. When it is time for Gilligan to go, Wrongway becomes afraid that Gilligan will be hurt and so knocks him out and takes his place. Unfortunately, when Wrongway returns to civilization, he is unable to tell anyone where the Castaways are, owing to his poor sense of direction. The story about the Castaways is written off as another one of his fanciful tales.
Second appearance
Wrongway returns to the island in Episode 24 ("The Return of Wrongway Feldman"). This time, he claims he will never leave. Having spent some time in civilization, he says he prefers the carefree ways of the island. After both Gilligan's and The Skipper's faked illnesses fail to get Wrongway to fetch a doctor to the island, The Skipper and the Professor decide to have everyone start to make the island like a city, forcing Wrongway to help them with the work, in an attempt to get Wrongway off the island. It eventually works, but Wrongway lands on another island only inhabited by natives who dote on him. Wrongway sends the Castaways a note in a bottle telling them of his good fortune.
Legacy
A diner in Canyon, Texas, is named after Wrongway Feldman. Inside is an upside-down plane suspended from the ceiling and an original script from Episode 5 framed on the wall.
