World Professional Kickboxing League

The World Professional Kickboxing League (WPKL) was one of the major international bodies regulating Muay Thai matches during the late 1990's. The organization was created in the Netherlands by Andre Fernhout and Mohammed Ait Hassou. It was established in 1994 as a response to one-sided policy that sent the existing Dutch regulating bodies, the Nederlandse Kick Boxing Bond (NKBB) and the Muay Thai Bond Nederland (MTBN) into decline.
The WPKL was at first only intended for professional fighters. It soon became clear, however, that there was a lot of demand for a solid organization for amateur fighters. The WPKL then decided to take care of fighters in both classes. In addition to operating at national level, the WPKL, based on its world-wide contacts, also started to operate on an international level.
From 1995 until 2003, the organisation was one of the major sanctioning bodies for professional Muay Thai. World champions of the WPKL included Ramon Dekkers, Ivan Hippolyte, Perry Ubeda, Sakmongkol Sithchuchok and Stjepan Veselic. In October 2008, the WPKL decided to change its name into the World Professional ThaiBoxing League (WPTBL). The organization ceased to exist in 2013.
