The Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) announced intentions to create a worldwide sports car racing series in June 2009. The championship has been described so far as an "intercontinental trophy", although World Le Mans Series has already been trademarked by the ACO and therefore is rumoured to be its name. The ACO attempts to start it in 2010, but may have to wait to 2011. Its calendar will comprise six to eight races from ACO's current American, European and Asian series. Races believed to be included are the 12 Hours of Sebring (Sebring, United States), the Petit Le Mans (Road Atlanta, United States), the 1000 km Spa (Spa-Francorchamps, Belguim) and the 1000 km Silverstone (Silverstone, United Kingdom) - the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been ruled out. Only LMP1s (i.e. sports prototypes) will take part of the championship, unlike the FIA GT1 World Championship, where grand tourers will compete.
