Windowfarms.org is an initiative and not for profit company with the aims to promote local indoor and decentralized farming in urban areas in order to reduce dependence upon externalized food production approaches. The core approach have been to use crowdsourced R&D and open source philosophy to create and test prototypes for growing vegetables indoors, in small apartments. The system proposed is made of vertically aligned bottles hosting some vegetables in front of windows. The whole is watered by a pomp with an adapted mix of water and nutriments. In 2010, Windowfarms.org was named one of the top 100 businesses to watch by the US Entrepreneur Magazine.
