Lieutenant Colonel (USAR ret.) William T. "Bill" Russell (born December 1963), is an American United States Army officer who served for for more than twenty eight years. He is currently running a write-in campaign against John Murtha for Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district in the 2008 Congressional election.
Military career Russell attended the United States Military Academy before obtaining his officer commission and undergraduate degree at Louisianna State University. He served twenty-eight years in active and reserved duty, with six tours to hostile zones, including Desert Storm, Kosovo, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On September 11, 2001, Russell and his wife were both staffers at the The Pentagon when it was attacked by the Al-Quida terrorists who'd commandeered American Airlines Flight 77.
2008 campaign for U.S. Congress Russell is running for Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district against incumbent John Murtha. Russell failed to submit enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in the Republican In that primary, however, he received more than 4,000 write-in votes, which entitled him to the Republican Party line in the general election.
Russell said that he decided to enter politics after hearing Murtha's 2006 accusations that Marines in Haditha "overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood." Seven Marines have been cleared or won case dismissals in the Haditha battle incident.
Russell has stated, "I believe in the sovereignty and security of this one nation, under God. I believe the primary role of government is to provide for the common defense and a legal framework to protect families and individual liberty. … I believe that no one owes me anything just because I live and breathe."
