Whale Fest

Sitka WhaleFest is a celebration of marine wildlife, specifically cetaceans, held every November in Sitka in the U.S. state of Alaska.
Guest speakers and researchers are brought to Sitka for a weekend of whale watching cruises, presentations, Scientists in the Schools, sea chantey concerts, a 10 K race beginning at Sitka's Whale Park, market with a cafe, a film festival and a mini-marine art show. The University of Alaska Southeast offers credit for taking part in the symposium and local marine biology students also take part.

This innovative science outreach program creates opportunities for future scientists to partake in discovery and develop relationships with professional mentors. SIS brings five renowned marine scientists to help secondary school students with creative thinking and problem solving techniques important to scientific understanding. In 2012, Scientists in the Schools provided education programming to 1601 students (kindergarten to graduate) during 1644 total hours of instruction. The SIS program is an innovative and popular model that is being replicated throughout the region.
