Organization of Ontario Secondary Students
|
The Organization of Ontario Secondary Students (OOSS) is a student-run organization founded in 2012 at Abbey Park High School in Oakville, Ontario. The organization was created in response to the conflict over the Putting Students First Act passed by the Ontario provincial government in an attempt to represent the collective student voice of Ontario secondary school students affected in the situation. The OOSS advocates for change in education by and for the students, currently focusing on pro-activity for co-curricular activities over the Bill 115 conflict. Mission 1. Reinstate co-curricular activities throughout Ontario by helping to expedite a resolution for the conflict over Bill 115 in the following manner: :i. Provide non-partisan information about Bill 115, allowing students and the public to develop informed opinions and voice themselves more effectively. :ii. Urge officials from both parties (the Ministry of Education and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation) to compromise on the issue at hand. 2. Forge a network between Ontario secondary students to strengthen and promote the student voice as a primary stakeholder in the conflict over Bill 115. History The OOSS was founded on December 6, 2012 by a group of grade 11 and grade 12 students at Abbey Park High School in Oakville, Ontario. Since then, the organization has grown to encompass more than 25 schools with functioning committees. The organization's most recent event, Sport Your Extra-Curricular (SYEC) Day, was held in more than 45 schools across Ontario, with more than 1500 participants.
