Wellow F.C.

Wellow F.C. is a football club based in the village of Wellow, near Romsey, in Hampshire England.

Original Club

Football has been played in Wellow for over a hundred years. It is unknown when the original club was formed but it is known that they played at Lower Common Road and were originally known as West Wellow FC. The 20's saw the club playing in the Salisbury & District League, where they would have met local rivals Awbridge and Lockerley, before switching to the Southampton League. The 1933/34 season saw the club collect their first piece of silverware when they defeated local rivals Romsey Town 2-0 to win the keenly contested Romsey Hospital Cup.

After World War II, the club re-emerged as Wellow FC and enjoyed plenty of success during the 50's as they climbed up through the Junior Divisions, winning three successive titles en-route to the Senior section. The early 70s saw a decline in fortune, resulting in relegation in 1971/72. With many other clubs in the area at this time competition for players was fierce as Wellow struggled on for another two seasons in Junior Division 1 and after being relegated again the Saturday side folded at the end of the 1973/74 season.

However, the clubs successful Sunday side, Wellow United (latterly known as Wellow Rovers), continued to operate in the PM Section of the City Of Southampton Sunday League where they reached they also reached the Senior Section before their eventual demise at the end of the 1981/82 season. This was not the end of sport at Lower Common Road as the village cricket club, Wellow & Plaitford to this day continue playing there. Over the years the ground has also used by various Wellow boys football teams.

Current Day Club

In 1987 the new Hatches Farm Playing Fields were opened and in order to make good use of the splendid new facility it was decided to reform the club after a five year absence. The newly reformed club initially only played on Sunday mornings in the New Forest League and then the City Of Southampton Sunday League where they enjoyed immense success in both competitions.

Wellow then turned their main attentions back to playing Saturdays and for the 1992/93 season they enrolled in the Southampton League where they soon raced up through the Junior Divisions. Five straight promotions (including two league titles) saw the club reach Senior Division 2 for the 1997/98 season but here they surprisingly struggled and suffered their first relegation. After consolidating back in Junior Division 1 for three seasons, promotion back was achieved in 2000/01 and this time the club were much better prepared as within three seasons they had reached the Premier Division, after winning the Senior Division 1 title in 2003/04.

Wellow continued to make steady progress in the Premier Division and after finishing 3rd in 2005/06, they successfully applied to join the Wessex League Division Two after making some impressive ground improvements. Despite the big step-up Wellow did well and finished in an excellent 3rd place but disaster struck at the end of the 2006/07 season when their application to erect floodlights was rejected. With the Wessex League being reduced to two divisions for clubs who only had the required facilities the club, like many others, were forced out of the competition. Wellow then joined the Hampshire League but after the loss of their manager and entire 1st XI they struggled and were relegated back to the Southampton League.
